Frequently Asked Questions About Therapy for Adults with ADHD, Autism & Burnout

Wondering what to expect in therapy? Whether you’re exploring ADHD or autism traits, feeling overwhelmed by burnout, or just starting to think about support, this FAQ page offers answers to common questions about working with our neurodivergent-affirming therapists at Get Psyched Therapy & Coaching. We serve adults in Redlands, Yucaipa, Beaumont, and virtually across California and Maine.

FAQs

  • No. You do not need a formal diagnosis for ADHD, autism, or any other condition to start therapy. Many of our clients are self-identified or just starting to explore their neurodivergence. Therapy is a space to explore your own lived experience. You do not have to justify seeking help here.

  • All sessions are offered virtually for clients located in California and Maine. You can meet with your therapist from the comfort of your home, office, or wherever you feel safe and grounded.

  • We recognize that brains work differently — and that’s not a problem to fix. Our work honors your sensory needs, pacing, identity, and ways of processing without trying to make you fit a mold.

  • Most sessions are 50 minutes. Your therapist will talk with you about frequency and pacing based on your goals, energy, and capacity.

  • If you’re feeling overwhelmed, exhausted, or misunderstood — and you're looking for therapy that truly meets you where you are — you're likely in the right place. We’re a good fit if you value curiosity, collaboration, and support that honors your identity and lived experience.

  • A clinical assessment — like the ones we provide — is conducted by a licensed mental health professional and includes a comprehensive intake, standardized tools, and a written clinical summary. It’s often used for personal insight, therapy planning, or workplace/academic accommodations.

A medical or diagnostic evaluation, by contrast, may include cognitive testing (IQ, neuropsych batteries), formal ADOS or CPT tools, and is typically completed by a psychologist, psychiatrist, or medical provider. These are often required for school IEPs, disability determinations, or prescription medication.

  • Our evaluations provide a clinical diagnosis that meets criteria used in therapeutic settings and many workplace or academic environments. However, if you need testing for legal, disability, or medication purposes, you may need an evaluation from a psychologist, neurologist, or MD. We’re happy to provide referrals if you need that type of assessment.

  • Yes — our clinical assessments are valid for diagnostic clarity, self-understanding, and often accepted by therapists, coaches, and educational/employment settings. We use evidence-based tools and provide a comprehensive report, but we do not offer cognitive testing or prescribe medication.

  • Our evaluations do not include medical assessments or prescriptions. If you're seeking medication for ADHD, you'll need to consult with a psychiatrist, primary care provider, or prescribing clinician. We’re happy to provide a summary you can share with your medical provider.

  • Item descriptionWhile our evaluations may help validate your lived experience, they are not sufficient alone for disability determination through programs like SSI/SSDI. If you need documentation for legal, government, or disability services, we recommend seeking a full neuropsychological evaluation or medical assessment. We can refer you to affirming providers.

  • Not at all. While some clients choose to continue working with us in therapy, many come just for the evaluation and follow-up session. There’s no pressure to continue unless it feels supportive for you.

  • Item descriptionYou’ll receive a comprehensive written report that includes your diagnostic findings, clinical impressions, and — if desired — recommendations for support, accommodations, or next steps. You can request this summary for your own use or to share with therapists, schools, or workplaces.

  • No — we do not offer neuropsych testing (e.g., IQ, executive function, learning assessments). Our assessments focus on ADHD and/or autism presentation through interviews, validated self-report tools, and clinical observation. If you need a neuropsych eval for learning disabilities, we can refer you to providers who offer that service.
